Easier to use than traditional PC programmes, apps (or applications) can be a great way to connect seniors to the digital world. The iPad is a tablet manufactured by Apple and uses the same apps as an iPhone.  There are other tablets that work on Android (or non Apple) and they also produce apps.  For the most part, the apps we mention here are for iPad or iPhone but there may well be versions available for Android.

Apps are easily downloaded and automatically installed with an iTunes account.  Some are free and some will incur a charge ranging from 99c upwards.  All the apps we recommend here are free to download, although you will need access to the internet either via a wi-fi connection or a data package from your mobile provider which will incur various charges.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

ABC iview – This free app will allow you to watch ABC TV, catch up programmes and exclusive iview programmes.  Instant and unlimited access to your favourite ABC programmes, live streaming and ABC news.
iBooks.-  This app gives you access to both free books on the iTunes library or you can choose to purchase books from the store.  There are options to adjust the font size and lighting.  You can also download a free Kindle e-reader app that connects to Amazon and will allow you to purchase Kindle books.
Facebook – a free app, for social networking.  Facebook has more than 800 million active users around the world.  This app allows users to keep up to date with friends, share photos, receive notifications when friends comment on your posts, play games, text and chat.
Google Earth -  This free app allows you to search for cities, places and businesses.  Google Earth uses GPS technology to zero in on any location.  Use for driving directions or walking or simply for a look at former homes you’ve lived in or places you’ve visited in the past to allow you to see what they look like today.
Zinio. – This app provides free access to explore, read and shop the world’s best magazines.  Offering a free selection thousands of titles plus paid subscriptions to see other stories once you’ve finished sampling the free offers.
The new Public Transport Victoria app gives you journey planning at your fingertips.  You can play your journey, navigate using the interactive map, use GPS to track your current location and access real time tram information and scheduled times for trains and buses.
Virtuoso is a free app that installs a piano keyboard to your iPhone or iPad.  This fun app allows you to play the piano.  Great to play on your own or with the grandchildren.
The Weather Channel.  A great app that provides a 7 day forecast with each day’s high and low temperatures.  It’s easy to programme your preferred cities.  It will also give you an hourly breakdown of the current day’s weather prediction.
Magnifying Glass with Light – This free app is designed for both iPhone and iPad.   It is a magnifying glass with flashlight and is great for giving a little extra help to see small objects, read small writing, look at maps, read menus etc.
Epicurious.  Search more than 30,000 recipes, save recipes, email recipes, create shopping lists, and read recipe reviews from other members.
Skype. A great app for staying in touch, You can make video calls with friends and family across the world anywhere you have access to a WiFi connection.
WebMD– A free app that provides 24/7 access to health information and first aid information.  The app can be personalised by saving drugs, conditions and articles relevant to the user.
It’s worth looking at an anti-virus app such as AVG Mobiliation.  This free app is available for Android and iPhone and iPad will help protect you from rogue apps and spam and also has a family feature ensuring children are protected from adult sites.  And always make sure your keep your device updated with the latest operating system.

Other useful Apps are available from most of the major banks on both iPad and Android.
