Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush will star alongside fellow Australian actor Jai Courtney in the upcoming film Storm Boy, with shooting starting in South Australia in July.

It will be a contemporary retelling of the iconic 1976 film, producers Ambience Entertainment said in a statement on Friday.

Rush, known for Shine, The King's Speech and Pirates of the Caribbean, will star as Mike "Storm Boy" Kingley, who recounts his childhood adventures to troubled teen granddaughter Madeline in an effort to stop her making the same mistakes he made.

Multiple award winner Rush is currently starring in National Geographic's 10-part television drama series GENIUS as Albert Einstein and in the upcoming Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Jai Courtney, known for Suicide Squad, The Water Diviner and Divergent, stars as "Hideaway Tom", a protective father who after the untimely death of his wife and daughter, removes himself and his son from society to live on a remote isolated coastline.

Prior to commencing filming on Storm Boy, Courtney will be on stage as Macbeth in the Melbourne Theatre Company's production of Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Award winning director Shawn Seet (Two Fists One Heart; Deep Water; The Code) will helm Storm Boy, using cutting edge CGI technology, 3D animation and live footage.

The new adaption of Colin Theile's tale is penned by Justin Monjo (The Secret Daughter, Spear).

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill welcomed the casting of Rush and Courtney.

"It's great to have two global superstars in Geoffrey Rush and Jai Courtney onboard to help tell this iconic South Australian story," he said.

"The state government is thrilled to support this film and the 100-plus jobs it is expected to create during production."

Storm Boy will be released in Australia and New Zealand in 2018 and will be sold internationally.
