Melbourne's west offers a great lifestyle for seniors

The City of Wyndham in Melbourne’s western fringe is a vibrant place for seniors to enjoy their later years. Tarneit, for example, is a budding residential outer west suburb attracting young families, middle-aged and older families and couples, as well as younger people starting out.

Conveniently located, Wyndham is easy for friends and family to visit, while everything you need to enjoy your retirement lifestyle is in effortless reach.

Just twenty five kilometres west of Melbourne’s CBD, the western residential suburbs of Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina are energised by the diversity and energy that young and growing families contribute. It is the affordability of practical, contemporary living that is attracting homemakers.

These are just some of many reasons why we’ve chosen Tarneit for one of our retirement village locations – Wyndham Grange.

Location, location, location

Less than 30 minutes drive from Melbourne’s CBD, Tarneit is a suburb of the City of Wyndham, one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia. There are good reasons for that. All medical services and hospitals, retailers, parklands and public transport are very accessible.

Tarneit railway station was officially opened in June 2015 and offers a faster service than the Werribee line. Located on the Deer Park – West Werribee railway line access to Melbourne’s CBD and regional Victoria are only a train station car park (there is one thousand available car parks!) or bus ride away.

The major regional retail hub, Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre and Cinema Complex is just a 12 minute bus ride from Tarneit railway station.

Other retail hubs less than 10 kilometres away from Tarneit include Tarneit Gardens, Wyndham Village Shopping Centre and Hogans Corner Shopping Centre in Hoppers Crossing.

If holiday travel or regular visits to and from family and friends afar, are part of your retirement schedule Tullamarine Airport is just a 35 kilometres car ride.

Tarneit is also a short trip away from tourist attractions including Werribee Open Range Zoo, Werribee Park Mansion and the hospitality buzz offered by bay side suburbs Williamstown and Altona. The historic gold rush cities of Ballarat and Bendigo, the Bellarine Peninsula and the magnificent Great Ocean Road are all within easy reach.

Fast freeway access to Victorian destinations

Located on the rural urban fringe of western Melbourne, the city of Geelong and the magnificent beaches and mountain ranges of the Bellarine Peninsula are an enjoyable day trip away from Tarneit.

Tarneit is less than a half hour drive on the freeway to Melbourne’s CBD, 45 minutes to Geelong, less than a half hour to Tullamarine Airport or Avalon Airport.

Access to and from Tarneit is easily found via the Princes Freeway, Western Freeway, Western Ring Road and the Geelong Ring Road.

Retail therapy

Tarneit is serviced well by its local Tarneit Gardens Shopping Centre, which offers major supermarket Woolworths, Chemist Warehouse and many other specialty stores. If you’re looking for a ‘big’ retail experience, Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre boasts major retailers Target, Kmart, Myer, Woolworths, Best and Less and a long list of popular retailers, along with a cinema complex.

Fresh produce

Continuing its legacy from its recent rural past, nearby Werribee South is a green hub of fresh produce supplies from market gardens and grazing lands.

Wyndham City Council’s website - - lists local fresh produce suppliers. You can also download a fabulous map of fresh produce suppliers throughout Wyndham:

Plenty of sights to explore with visitors

The historic sea port of Williamstown and the bay side suburb of Altona are across the bay side of the Princes Freeway and are great places to enjoy a caffeine fix and a meander, a lazy brunch or a half day lunch.

Graced by iconic tourist destinations such as the original and majestic 1870s Italianate masterpiece that is Mansion Hotel and Spa at Werribee Park and its beautiful garden setting, the Victoria State Rose Garden, the tranquillity of Werribee River, Shadowfax Wines, Werribee Open Range Zoo, You Yangs Regional Park, Skeleton Creek Wetlands, RAAF Museum and Point Cook Coastal Park and Homestead, the area is popular year round with visitors.

Golf, walking, picnicking and more

If golf is a treasured pastime, the well regarded, multi-award winning Sanctuary Lakes Club is a great place to take on 18 challenging holes in a Greg Norman designed picturesque course. Werribee Park Golf Club is another option, offering nearly four decades of history and 18 holes set alongside the Werribee River.

Vast public parklands, coastal plains and wetlands mean that there are infinite options for packing a day pack and heading off for a walk or a meander on a bike. Federation Trail, Lollypop Creek Trail, Werribee River Trail, Heathdale Glen Ordern Wetlands Trail and Skeleton Creek Trail are just a handful of options. Point Cook Coastal Park and You Yangs Regional Park provide a range of walking challenges from easy to difficult.

Summer polo events are often hosted at Werribee Park Mansion. And if horse racing is an interest, Werribee Racecourse is only a 15 minute drive away.

Arts, history and culture

Wyndham City Council boasts four public libraries, the Wyndham Cultural Centre, including Performing Arts auditorium, Tattersall’s Theatre and Wyndham Art Gallery and lots of art and cultural community events.

On days where the outdoors beckons, Werribee Park Sculpture Walk hosts a changing collection of work by Australia’s leading sculptors all year round.

For a day of history, culture and indulgence, Werribee Park is the place to visit. Find out more by visiting Parks Victoria’s Werribee Park pages.

It offers the full suite of hospital services.  There are also too many medical centres and veterinary clinics in close proximity to mention.

The University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic, U-Vet is located in Werribee if you want some of the best pet care in Australia for your other family members.
